3 Things Every Good Storage Container Should Have

Your product is as good as the storage container where you keep it. Therefore, you should ensure that select a good container that will protect your product from elements that have the potential to destroy it. The definition of a good container will depend on the product you want to store. However, there are common aspects that good storage containers possess.

1. Efficient

The term efficiency means that the container accommodates the product without leaving any unnecessary spaces. For example, it would be inefficient to store a half liter of alcohol in a container that has a 50-liter capacity. It is because apart from storing a product you will use it to transport it too. Therefore, it means during transportation most of the space will be wasted. Excess space also means there will be excess container material. Hence, a good percentage of the transport costs will go towards transporting the container itself rather than the product. An example is the one given earlier; the 50-liter container is most likely to weigh more than the half liter of alcohol. It will cause you to incur unnecessary costs.

However, you should also not choose a container where the product fits in tightly. For example, in the case of a liquid or gas, it will expand when temperatures rise, and if there is no space, the container can burst. If it’s solid the product will get damaged if it drops or knocks against something solid.

2. Cushioning

A good storage container should provide cushioning to the stored product. Cushioning is necessary for solid products. It is because they get damaged easily on impact. The cushioning provided by the container should be able to handle the product. A key consideration when determining the cushioning is how fragile the product is and its weight. For example, a glass table would be more fragile than a wooden one, and it will require a good cushion. Another example is a flat screen television and a sound system. The flat screen will require a good cushion compared to a sound system. There are different types of materials used in providing the cushioning. They include Styrofoam, foam sheets, and bubble-out bags. They have varying degrees of effectiveness, and their appropriateness will depend on the type of product you want to cushion.

More fragile products will require thicker or multiple cushions. It is the reason why you will find most manufacturers using Styrofoam and bubble-out bags to cushion products container glass.

3. Seal

A primary objective of storing a product in a container is to protect it from elements which could damage it. For products that are sensitive to air and moisture present in the environment, it is critical that the storage container has an airtight seal. An example of this type of products is salts such sodium chloride. Sodium chloride possesses the hygroscopic property, and this means that it can absorb water from the surrounding air and form a solution. Seals also apply to the storage of products that have volatile components which could easily evaporate or sublimate to the environment when exposed to air. An example is methylated spirit which can easily evaporate. Another example is beverages which have dissolved carbon dioxide. If it evaporates, you will not enjoy the drink.

Apart from protecting the product inside, seals ensure that no one tampers until it reaches the end user. It applies if you are storing the product and using a third party to deliver it to the desired party. The aspect applies majorly to commercial firms. An example is washing detergent that you use. It certainly has a seal which if someone else opened and delivered it to you, you will be able to notice. Such seals prevent someone stealing the product or modifying it before delivering it to you to for some personal gains. For example, one can open a soda, add some poison and deliver it to you.

The aspects that you look for in a good storage container will depend on the product that you want to store. However, there are common characteristics such as cushioning, seals, and efficiency that every container should have. These characteristics will ensure that your products are well protected.
