Some laptops are a bit easier to work on than others, as there are some laptops designed to remain intact. However, with some straightforward instructions and tips, even if you’ve never worked on a laptop before you should be able to replace the laptop circuit board without too many issues.
Buy the Correct Circuit Board
Before you can replace the current circuit board, you need to make sure you have the appropriate replacement board. Look up the exact computer system you’re currently running. This is found in the “About This Mac/Computer” section on the computer. This area will tell you exactly the kind of equipment you’re running. You’ll also identify the kind of circuit board you have in the laptop so you know what to purchase.
Know Your Warranty
It’s possible the current warranty on the laptop covers the need to replace its circuit board. So check this ahead of time. Additionally, understand that taking apart the computer on your own likely voids the warranty, so take extra care ahead of time.
You’ll need to pick up the right kind of tools. The inside of your laptop uses often unusual screws, so unless you have a toolkit designed for working on a laptop, chances are you won’t have the correct tools on hand. Pick up a computer toolkit. This will come with several different micro screwdrivers. Some of these drivers look like little starbursts with the number of edges on it. You’ll also want a static bracelet. Static electricity can instantly short out every single component within your laptop. You’ll want to take precautions here. Close but Don’t Tighten
Before you place the case of the laptop back together and fasten everything back to its pre-work condition, test it out first. You don’t want to try and fire the laptop up only to find something not working. You’ll end up taking the screws in and out, which increases the chance of stripping the screws. Test out the power before locking the laptop down. This way, when you know it powers on you can then go about securing the laptop and closing it all off. Make sure every single screw goes back into the laptop.
